HTA September 2006 Newsletter
Final Days of Registration
The tile conference registration is in its last week. The conference has received numerous sponsorships and donations from businesses and individuals for people to attend. Sponsors include Tile Council of America, Eric Astrachan, Arizona Tile, Manitou Arts, Fantasia Tile, Jeff Heller and anonymous. . Scholarships are available to HTA and THF members. Please contact the Tile Heritage Foundation if you would like to receive information on applying for one. If you would like to sponsor part of the event please contact the HTA to get more information 612-781-6409. Or e-mail the HTA
Four years ago when we were preparing for the tile symposium many artists said they wanted to attend but could not afford it. This year money is not the issue, but rather time. Is this an testament to the growing success of area tile artists? I certainly hope so, but at the same time I'd like to encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to step back and reflect on the accomplishments we have worked hard to achieve here in the Upper Midwest. Personally I think it's important to give oneself enough free time to allow for inspiration, skills, and knowledge to develop so as to improve and move on to the next level of achievement. This conference is designed for that very purpose. Please take a moment to go over the registration form and make sure you are taking full advantage of this great opportunity. I am confident you will not regret your participation. Thank you.
Tile Map to the Printer!
The map of historic and contemporary tiles of the Twin Ports
Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin “Living with History” has been sent to the printer and will be ready by next week. 2000 copies will be printed. All those registered for the tile conference will receive a free map in their registration packets. Each HTA member will also receive a complimentary map and more can be purchased at a wholesale cost of $2 each, which you can then resell or give away. The retail price is $3.75 plus tax.
Karin Kraemer researched the map and took most of the photos. Tom Hollenhorst made the maps, and Josh Blanc designed the document and got the map ready for the printer. A Doty Research Grant from the Tile Heritage Foundation made the map financially possible. Many other hands and brains were also used in the editing and research process. Thanks go to: Marcia Anderson, Minnesota Historical Society, Josh Blanc, Paul Wood, Clay Squared to Infinity, Karin Kraemer, Duluth Pottery LLC, Maryanne Norton, Duluth Public Library, Susan Tunick, Friends of Terra Cotta, Michelle Lee, Mike Sims, Norman Karlson, Sheila Menzies, Joe Taylor, Tile Heritage Foundation, Sharon Darling, Teddy Meronik, Superior Public Library, Valerie Burke, Douglas County Historical Society, Vance Koehler, Wade Lawrence, Glensheen, Dennis Lamkin, Duluth Preservation Alliance, and Sheldon Aubutwith. In addition The Duluth Preservation Alliance has enthusiastically sponsored the map which includes 31 images of historic and contemporary tiles at 67 sites. The website will have more images when it is transferred to the HTA website.
5th Annual MN Tile Festival
September 16, 2006
American Swedish Institute, 2600 Park Ave Minneapolis, MN. Time: 10-5 PM, $5 admission fee, members get in free.
It should be a stellar year for the 5th Annual MN Tile Festival, especially with the MN Tile Conference as part of the mix. Special guests include the Northern Clay Center, Edina Art Center, Mosaic on a Stick, and the Tile Heritage Foundation. We are not doing our silent auction this time around, but the Tile Heritage Foundation is asking artists to donate tiles for their fundraiser. You can donate your tiles the day of the event or bring them to Clay Squared before the event. Kirsten Walstead will have the 2nd annual commemorative tile featured to the right. Members should receive their free tickets in the mail. If you forget to bring it we will have a list of current HTA members to let you in.
The HTA has purchased the ASID mailing list and is sending out complimentary tickets, postcard and letter to invite them to the show.
The HTA will be mailing over 4000 postcards but we ask the HTA artist members please do not forget to send the postcards to your mailing list. If you need more postcards please contact the HTA to get some more. Nick and Rosie Heille have sent out information to artists setting up for the show. If you have any questions please contact them when you receive the letter. If you wish to volunteer for the MN Tile Festival contact Nick and Rosie at

ASID Holiday Gift Market
Our deadline for submissions for the ASID Holiday Gift Market has been extended to September 22. We're excited about the artisans who've expressed interest in participating so far. This would be such a wonderful opportunity to showcase the excellent body of regional craft artisans. As noted in our invitation, this event will be widely advertised in Mpls St Paul magazine, ASID and IMS publications, local community newspapers, and to the large direct mail list of previous purchasers and attendees (over 2500). Hope to see you at the ASID Sample Sale. I've enclosed the entry form again for your convenience. Please let me know if you have additional questions. Thank you.
